Frequently asked questions

Federal tax brackets are income tiers set by the CRA; each tier is taxed at a different marginal rate (e.g. 15% on the first portion, 20.5% on the next, and so on). Brackets are indexed to inflation each year. Planwise shows current and upcoming years with charts.
Each province and territory sets its own tax rates on taxable income. You pay both federal and provincial tax; your combined marginal rate is the sum of the federal and provincial rates for your bracket. Select a year and province on this site to see federal and provincial brackets and charts.
Marginal tax rate is the percentage of tax you pay on an additional dollar of income. It is determined by your top federal and provincial bracket. It is used to understand the tax cost of extra income or the savings from deductions like RRSP contributions.
