Frequently asked questions

Your RRSP refund is calculated using your marginal tax rate: the rate applied to your last dollar of income. The calculator multiplies your contribution by your combined federal and provincial marginal rate (see tax brackets) to approximate the refund you would get for that contribution.
Marginal tax rate is the percentage of tax you pay on an additional dollar of income. It depends on your taxable income and province; as income rises you move into higher brackets. The RRSP calculator uses it to estimate how much tax you save per dollar of RRSP contribution.
Contributions made in the first 60 days of a year can be applied to the previous tax year. So contributions by early March typically count for the prior year’s return. The calculator uses the tax year you select to apply the correct brackets.
Yes. Select your province of residence and the tax year; the calculator uses that year’s federal and provincial brackets to compute your marginal rate and refund. Quebec and other provinces with different structures are supported.
